Bertha's Bad*** Brew
by Sean Keef

The trick to any flaming drink is to either make it with a high enough alcohol content that it is flammable, or create a barrier between your non-flammable liquid and the hooch.  Given this is a coffee drink and not a frat-party shot, I chose the latter method.  My barrier of choice is homemade whipped cream – the heavier the better.  This is also my sweetener, so use plenty of sugar – 2 parts cream to 1 part sugar is my recipe – whip till stiff using a mixer if you value your arm.
·         Brew one pot of strong, good coffee (such as Peet’s French Roast)
·         Slice an orange to achieve 3 slices 1/2 inch thick.  Arrange on a small plate side by side.
·         On a separate small plate lay out ¼ cup sugar and then sprinkle with ½ tsp ground cinnamon and ¼ tsp ground cayenne pepper.

·         Rim a tall, glass 8-10 oz. coffee cup with the orange slices and sugar mix
·         Add ½ oz Goldschlager
·         Add ½ oz Agavero
·         Add 5-6 oz of coffee
·         In a separate measuring glass or cup, mix together 1 oz Bacardi 151 and ½ oz Appleton Rum
·         Spoon on whipped cream, covering coffee completely
·         Ignite rum mixture, slowly pour over whipped cream.  Heat will semi-caramelize the sugar rim and melt the whipped cream.
·         Quickly garnish with cinnamon stick and serve.  Drink should stay lit for 10-15 seconds.

Sean is a native Idahoan who understands Napolean Dynamite all too well.  When he isn’t working as a Technical Evangelist for IBM, he can be found experimenting with food and drink or sailing the seven seas on his 46-foot catamaran, Vida Libre.  Oh, yeah...he was also the one who suggested that Hubby ask me out on our first date, and he was the best man in our wedding.

This recipe was created to go along with my pattern Bertha's Mad, Mysterious Mobius from What Would Madame Defarge Knit? by Cooperative Press.

I un-vented this pattern recipe as a companion to my Land of Counterpane pattern in What (Else) Would Madame Defarge Knit? from Cooperative Press.  (Order here.)

Got a sick kid who's not feeling up to eating a real breakfast?  Whip up one of these for her, and she'll have something substantial to sip on while she curls up with her favorite novel or this week's hot video game.

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz milk (I use 2%.)
  • 4 oz plain yogurt (I use non-fat.  See Crock Pot Yogurt recipe on this blog.)
  • 3 oz fresh banana slices
  • 3 oz frozen banana
  • 1 oz uncooked, non-instant oatmeal (I use a blend of oatmeal, barley, rye, wheat, oat bran, steel-cut oats, and flax seeds.)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice
Alternate fruit and other ingredients, then blend on highest setting (on my blender = "ice crush") until things are well combined and you're pleased with consistency.  Easy peasy!

To turn this into an "adult beverage":
  • Use only 2 oz of milk.
  • Leave out the oatmeal and vanilla.
  • Add in 2 oz of rum.  (If you use a spiced rum, you can leave out the pumpkin pie spice, too.)
